Sherman Wayne Fontenot

Kinder-Funeral service for Sherman Wayne Fontenot, 81, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Kingsfarm United Pentecostal Church. Rev. Steve Haymon, Rev. A.A. Haymon, Jr, Rev. Joe Fontenot, and Rev. Tim Bowers will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Oak Cemetery. All arrangements have been entrusted to Ardoin/Allen Parish Funeral Home of Kinder.

The family will receive visitors at Kingsfarm United Pentecostal Church on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 from 3-8 p.m. Visitation will then continue at the church on Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Wayne was a lifelong member of Kingsfarm United Pentecostal Church. He was a 1954 graduate of Kinder High School as well as a 1962 graduate of McNeese State University where he excelled in basketball for M.S.U. and earned a B.A. in Elementary Education. He taught Math and Science at Kinder Elementary for 13 years then drove a school bus for Allen Parish School Board for 14 years, all while farming rice and soybeans after the death of his father in 1967, until the early 1980’s. In 1976, Wayne was instrumental in creating the Southwest Allen Parish Water District V where he served as Manager for 36 years. He also served as Vice President and President of the Louisiana Rural Water Association, and President, Secretary, and Executive Board Member of the National Rural Water Association. He travelled throughout the United States attending State and National Conferences and Meetings for rural water and promoting safe drinking water.

Wayne also served his country from 1956-1959 in the United States Marine Corp, serving during peace time in California, North Carolina, the Philippines, and Okinawa, Japan. Over the years, Wayne was an active member of the Kinder Chamber of Commerce, served as President of the Kinder Rotary Club, taught Sunday school and served as Church Secretary at Kingsfarm UPC for many years. Wayne was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Wanda, for 59 years. He was also a loving father, son, brother, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish Wayne’s memory include his wife, Wanda Oliver Fontenot, of Kinder; three children, Vannesa Burton and husband, Danny, of McQueeney, TX, Mindy Laughlin and husband, Steve, of Kinder, and Kendall Wayne Fontenot and wife, Krystal, of Westlake; one brother, Douglas Fontenot of Houston, TX; one sister, Christy Fontenot of Kinder; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a host of friends and relatives.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Elam and Aline (Johnson) Fontenot; two sisters, Bonnie Bowers and Paula Louviere; and one grandson, Matthew Wayne Nevils.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Ejiro Ughovwa, Kinder Retirement and Rehabilitation Center, and Brighton Bridge Hospice for their outstanding care for Mr. Wayne.
