Helen lived the majority of her life in Oberlin. It was there that she met Norman Jenkins, while teaching. She moved away to Biloxi, but it did not take Norman long to realize he missed her. On the way to see her, Norman was in a terrible vehicular accident in Kinder. He fell into the Calcasieu River and had to drag himself out to be rescued. So, they had to postpone their July wedding to August. They propped Norman up in his full body cast (white tuxedo), in his mother’s living room, for the ceremony. Helen often said, “I caught him, and he couldn’t get away.” She and her husband, Norman, were married for 43 years before his passing on October 15, 1991. Helen taught for 37 years, many of those years as a Science teacher at Oberlin High School. She retired from OHS in 1987. Helen was also a devoted mother to her only child, Jeanne. Helen Holland Jenkins’ summary of her life was, “Among human beings, I consider myself to be most fortunate.”

Those left to cherish Helen’s memory include her loving daughter, Jeanne Soileau, and husband, Randy, of Eunice; two granddaughters, Sarah S. Andrepont, and Anna S. Rainville, and husband, Ivan, all of Eunice; three great granddaughters, Kelsey N. Courville, Olivia G. Andrepont, and Sophia H. Rainville, all of Eunice; and, two sisters-in-law, Ann Jenkins of Oberlin, and Marjorie Jenkins of Orange Beach, AL.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents, James and Alice Holland; her husband, Ivor Norman Jenkins; two brothers, Victor and Dean Holland; and three sisters, Ruth H. Stout, Grace B. Guillory, and Bernice Heath.
