Lawrence Kardell "Kirk" Bertrand

Oberlin-Funeral service for Lawrence “Kirk” Bertrand, 62, will be held at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Oberlin at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2015. Rev. Jacob S. Conner will officiate. Burial will follow in Oberlin Cemetery under the direction of Allen Parish Funeral Home.

The family will receive visitors at Allen Parish Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, October 16, 2015. The Holy Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until time of service.

Lawrence, affectionately known as “Kirk”, passed peacefully in his sleep Monday, July 27, 2015, at his home in Piscataway, NJ. For 34 years, Kirk was a diligent employee with Wakefern Food Corporation in Keasbey, NJ, serving as a Sr. Systems Analyst. He was a computer programmer and supervisor of colleagues for 25 years. He was appreciated by many at Wakefern which was similar to a small family.

Kirk obtained a Master’s Degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, in 1983. His undergraduate studies were in psychology and computer science which he earned at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches in 1976. Kirk was also a 1972 graduate of Oberlin High School.

Kirk was a very intelligent man with a “dry sense of humor.” He loved to travel and go cruising. He was very fond and passionate about his Cajun history and roots.

Those left to mourn Kirk’s passing include three surviving brothers, Daniel Lee Bertrand of McKinney, TX, John Scott Bertrand of Oberlin, and Michael Mayo Bertrand and wife, Michelle Williams Bertrand, of Thornwell; aunt and uncle, Rosemary Shipp Benoit and Burnet Jules Benoit of Lafayette; three nieces, Megan Bertrand Pellegrin of Bridge City, TX, Courtney Bertrand and Victoria Bertrand, both of Thornwell.

Kirk is also survived by 12 cousins, Taryn Pellegrin, Angela Bertrand Terrell, and Eric Bertrand, all of Bridge City, TX, Peggy Bertrand Dauzat and Donna Bertrand, both of Oakdale, Marla Bertrand of Port Arthur, TX, Pam Bertrand Benoit of Overton, TX, Ricky Bertrand of Douglasville, GA, Lisa Benoit Abshire of Independence, Timothy Benoit and Tyler Joseph Stephens II, both of Lafayette, and Thomas Greg Benoit of Fountain Inn, SC.

Kirk is preceded in death by his parents, Mildred Mary Benoit Bertrand and John Dewey Bertrand of Oberlin; his maternal grandparents, Beaulah Higginbotham Benoit and May Benoit of Church Point; his paternal grandparents, Zoeway Marcantel Bertrand and Lawrence Bertrand of Oberlin; one aunt, Alice Mary Bertrand Bertrand; three uncles, Wilson “Doo” Bertrand, Arthur Lee “Chick” Bertrand and Thomas Lebon Benoit.
